Writing Assignment (due 12/4): Artist Statement

Writing Assignment / Artist Statement

"An artist statement is a not-too-long series of sentences that describe what you make and why you make it. It’s a stand-in for you, the artist, talking to someone about your work in a way that adds to their experience of viewing that work."

Now that you have broadened your oeuvre (body of work) with this art intervention, let's rewrite your artist statement. Take a moment to reflect on your experience writing and reading an art review during this course.

What made your writing successful? What made your writing not so successful?
How did you write about work so the reader can visualize your work without seeing it in person?

And brainstorm before writing full paragraphs.

Would you like to share your background, which may have influenced the way you work?

What are some facts about your work? In what medium do you work? What tools do you use? In what scale do you work?

What inspires you to make work? What, exactly, are you excited about? Whose footsteps are you following, if any?

What is unique about your process, material, or approach to the presentation?

1. Title your post as follows: "[Artist or Designer] Statement : [Your name], [1-3 words from your statement that describe you as an artist/designer]"

2. In about 250 words, answer the following questions.
  • What do you make?
  • Why do you make it?
  • How do you make it?
5. Post due on Thursday, 11/27
