An artist that I interviewed last week is my fellow classmate and group member Brianna Pacheco. Brianna's project that she worked for this year and that she showed at the BFA show at the spring semester was her "Education for All" work. It has a width of 18in and a height of 24in and was created using adobe illustrator. The question I asked first was the title of her project and if it had any meaning on it? She said the title is "Education for All" and that it is meant to symbolize that everyone has right to education, from elementary to college. Next question I asked is where did the initial idea for her project come from? She replied that the initial idea for her project came from a paper she wrote in May 2022 about the effect from the covid-19 pandemic had on education. It detailed how the switch to remote learning was not feasible for everyone as some students lacked the necessary devices and others were starting to miss classes. She want to this concept by focusing on students from disadvantaged communities and create posters to spread awareness that we should strive to make all levels of education, especially college, possible to achieve, regardless of someone's background, as the education requirements for jobs are raising.
After she answered my question, I wanted to ask is that who are some of the biggest artistic or conceptual influences that inspired her work, and how did they inform her approach? She said some of the biggest artistic influences that inspire her work are Shepard Fairey and James Montgomery Flagg. Another thing that brought her inspiration is Poster Stellar, an exhibition containing posters created in various genres in various levels of expertise by those local or worldwide. They informed her about the amount of color she should use, the placement and style of text, and the effectiveness of minimal or busy design. One thing I was curious is if her work had any meaning in it. I think the meaning of her work is to offer many students who don't have a way to go to school or the technology to attend to virtual class and have the school provide the support as needed. But its more than that. Brianna stated that the message she hope viewers take away from her project is that everyone has a right to education, regardless of their background or the hardships they face. However, she's not quite sure and hasn't figured out how to ensure that her work will resonate with its intended audience.
Since her project is about education, I wanted to know what was the core concept or question Brianna wanted to explore with her project? The question she wanted to explore with her project is how she can make people feel compelled to partake in changes that will allow everyone to have access to any form of education. The initial idea came from a paper that she wrote in May 2022 about the effect of the covid-19 pandemic on education and how it highlighted existing issues that became more apparent in the face of remote learning. I asked her about the time and effort she made into this project. In which I asked " How did you manage your time and prioritize tasks effectively throughout this long-term project? Her answer was that she managed her time by researching posters created by different artist, their intended purposes, and how effective they were in conveying their messages to their targeted audience. She spend time taking the concept for a poster and create a few versions of it, each time changing how she approach its design, to test which one stands out the most in terms of design and effectiveness. I feel like her poster does serve it's purpose when it comes to education in general. Her project is strong message for students and other people that education is in fact for everyone and we must provide the necessary needs for our students to have their education.
The final question I asked Brianna regarding her project, is that what was the most challenging obstacle she faced when making this project, and how did she overcome it? Brianna stated that the most challenging obstacle she faced was designing posters that stand out. The poster should be able to grab the viewer's attention and not blend in with the surrounding area. That basically means that is badly designed and no one is going to pay attention to its message. She has yet to overcome this issue but a possible solution is printing the posters out to hang them in various and observe if someone stops to look at them or present the posters to different people to get their opinions on how effective the posters are in making them care about their intended message. Posters are designed to spread awareness to create change that will allow anyone, especially those from disadvantaged communities, to have access to all forms of education, especially college. In today's society, the higher your education credentials are, the more job opportunities are available. Most students typically strive to graduate from high school and attend college. Brianna's work is considered art in my opinion and it should be posted everywhere where everyone can see and make them believe that education is still important in our world and we must provide education to the new people in this society that need it the most.
