Mid Review Presentation/ Kitchen Heirlooms/Ingrid Rivera

In this slideshow, I’ll be presenting my art intervention "Kitchen Heirlooms,"  a project that reimagines a cookbook as a living altar where people can contribute their own recipes and memories. The installation will take place at Riverview Community Garden, a space that embodies growth and community. Visitors will be able to engage with the shared altar and also have the opportunity to take home a miniature version of the cookbook, carrying those stories and connections with them.

  1. There is something deeply personal about cooking, recipes, and how they relate to both heritage and memory. This is a captivating project that presents many opportunities for connection.

  2. I do feel like your project will be successful just from the fact that it's about cooking and people do love food. Especially if its a recipe that they love as well. It is interesting to know that cooking can relate to our memories and heritage at the same time.

  3. Hearing and reading about your project made me immediately think of all the recipes I've learned either from my mom, siblings, and friends-- and it's interesting how much we can connect with someone through food. I think having an altar-like installation is a great choice because it honors both the person we remember as well as the culture itself. I have a little altar/shrine at home for my dad and its a bunch of picture frames, clothing and other accessories. I think items related to cooking like maybe an apron or a favorite mug that you can put stuff in could be some ideas to include if you wanted to!

  4. This is a very successful idea that I feel allows the community be involved in a way that goes beyond the intervention. Having the pot essentially being a vessel for preservation/remembrance is very clever. I'm excited to see this come to life.

  5. Ingrid, as promised, I am sharing my husband's family recipe in this link.
It was featured in a book called I LIKE FOOD FOOD TASTES GOOD published in 2007, so I just took snapshots of the pages for you.
