POST 3/ EMAIL/ AUDIO RECORDINGS AND PARENTAL SUPPORT

 Dear Andrew Gradison,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Christopher McVicar, an up-and-coming artist developing a public art project that aims to shift how society perceives and supports parents. This intervention will voice young parents who often face housing insecurity, limited mental health access, and inflexible work conditions before and after childbirth. The current U.S. systems tend to center only the child, while the needs of parents remain overlooked or even stigmatized. I believe this imbalance urgently needs to be challenged.

For this intervention, I’m inviting parents to share their personal stories and struggles through short audio recordings, accessed and submitted via QR codes placed in community spaces. The spaces will be chosen strategically to incorporate low, middle, and high income communities to show similarities and differences of all parents unfairly expected to be perfect caregivers under the current circumstances. These voices will be woven into a soundscape—an immersive audio compilation played in public to surround listeners with the layered, raw realities of parenting today and in the past. The goal is to bring these often-invisible voices into the public ear, making their presence felt and heard.

I’m reaching out because your mission resonates with this project, and I’d greatly appreciate the chance to connect and bring awareness to this issue in partnership with your organization. Please let me know if you’d be open to a brief conversation.

Best regards,
Christopher McVicar
