My BFA project is going to be a series of paintings where it's an intimate exploration of self-identity, displacement, and cultural memory as a Puerto Rican woman navigating the space between belonging and longing. Picking just one article that relates to my BFA project was definitely a challenge as there are many ideas and events that can relate to Puerto Rican identity and the topics I want to explore through my project. The article that I choose is Bad Bunny’s “NUEVAYoL” and the Decolonial Pulse of Pop Culture By David Sathuluri. This article explores Bad Bunny song “NUEVAYoL” and how this piece of pop culture is a planned act of reclamation, acknowledging the diaspora, and that is echoing decades of anticolonial struggle. The article mentions cultural resistance, nuyorican identity, and pop culture as political intervention. At the end of the article Sathuluri says “NUEVAYoL” demonstrates how pop culture can help create the conditions for political organizing by building identity, fostering solidarity, and challenging dominant narratives about who belongs and who deserves freedom.” This meant a lot to me because these are themes that I want to accomplish to have in my BFA Project of Puerto Rican identity and exploring what this is today for me and for other Boricuas.
