My BFA show for next spring is called The Butcher House. My series of work will be based on body autonomy and questioning the mindset of viewing women’s bodies as property. Im approaching this theme and related ones with paintings that are anatomical figures. Using the obscure/absurd metaphor of fresh meat, premium, grade A, etc. as a way to acknowledge this issue and have others self reflect.
I chose this article because it pretty much covers the nuance of women’s health/bodies. Even though one’s autonomy should automatically be considered a human right, even that is questioned. So that’s when we have to question why. Even in this day in age, women are still fighting for personal choice over their body; an example being the overturn of Roe vs. Wade. Having the mindset seeing women as property comes with sexual health related things being stigmatized or seen as taboo.
It’s good to be informed and facing this reality it’s inevitable for some to feel uncomfortable. There cannot be any growth without some discomfort. Which is why Im approaching this topic in my BFA that may seem kind of absurd, putting the bodies in settings where they’re being packaged and things related to that. It’s to question that mindset but also put some in perspective how dehumanizing it can be having your body autonomy constantly be up for debate.
