I chose this news article from NPR as it heavily aligns with the core of my BFA project that will be a fantasy comic about a teenage girl and parental death. In this article, a high school girl struggles with the loss of her father due to COVID, and so her teacher, who had gone through a similar experience, decides to start a supportive club that unites students dealing with grief.
Reading this article was very healing for me, as I lost my dad right before my senior year in high school. All the depressive feelings that were spoken about amongst the several kids in this article were very relatable, and it made me remember how much of an impact my dad’s passing had on me when I was younger. If a club like the one mentioned in the article existed back in my day, I would have definitely been a lot better at handling my grief sooner.
With my BFA comic, I hope to offer the same support and relatability that a kid going through grief may not get from school or at home. I often found solace in reading manga and watching cartoons, trying to see myself in characters who were resilient. I think it’s important to write stories that inspire young readers and make them feel seen during such a dark time.
