Sticker Sketch
The previous article I provided explained the importance of women’s body autonomy and how that ties with the nuances that come with it. Not only does it affect women, it affects everyone and society in general. There were other sources linked so I decided to expand and find specific articles that could also be considered reliable.
My BFA project is based on male gaze, women’s autonomy, the patriarchy, etc. so from my research I was able to focus on women’s and global health. Considering how this is always under the radar of attack, it’s important to keep in mind how the denial to one’s body autonomy is simply based on control. There’s gender-based attacks that would affect one’s health and on top of that there are intersectional aspects that already hinders someone access to proper health care especially with reproductive rights or HIV, etc.
Some questions that arise when researching this topic is:
· How would I display that feeling of being objected?
· What symbolism can I use to point out the predatory gaze?
· What metaphor could I call back to that highlights an aspect of a patriarchal society that inherently harms women, yet makes the viewer uncomfortable when confronted with the irony of that mindset?
· How could I highlight the importance and impact of revoking women’s right to sexual health practices?
For my art intervention I’m planning to base this off the title of one of my paintings What’s Mine Isn’t Yours that I have done for my BFA. Tagging things in public with stickers like in the rough sketch I provided. For now, it’s a very open idea but I wanted there to be intention with what body part that would be cut off, placement of symbolism that calls back to control/gaze, all that would open an opportunity for discussion and reflection.
