"Behind Those Alluring Eyes, Something Sinister Lurks" Cierrah Kelly

Cierrah Kelly, known to friends as Ceci created a work titled “behind those Alluring Eyes, Something Sinister Lurks” on March 24, 2025. It was made using ink on transfer paper and 7 by 10 inches. It was originally made/designed for a silkscreen class but was later printed onto a shirt making it a wearable design. One thing that stands out after hearing about it and seeing it was that it gives off an odd Gothic Medieval times vibe, the banner wrapped around the heroine.

At first glance I would have thought that it was a pirate because of the hat and the dagger through the heart on her side. After being told she was a heroine, I immediately tried to think of what kinda hero she is. The dagger gets me to believe that she’s had a rough background. Both the dagger and the heart usually symbolize pain and or betrayal.

The banner saying, “Behind Those Alluring Eyes, Something Sinister Lurks”, allows me to think of different ideas, one being that her eyes might lure you in but really she's dangerous, almost like a siren. On the other hand I think that Cierrah is using this character almost as a metaphor, maybe how we present ourselves in a different way while concealing deeper or maybe darker truths. This work is both mysterious and emotional, definitely gives off a sense of unease or something unsettling about it. There is clearly a hidden story behind it though.

Comparing to other illustrative works, Cierrah's piece definitely has all the aspects of both symbolism and it was aesthtically pleasing to look at. Many artists use this kind of style but not to this extent, this piece used them in a way that feels personal. From the symbolism, to its style choice, it makes a strong example of art that shows a story further than just what's just shown. I believe this is good art.
