Dear Martin Kruck,
My name is Samantha Castro, and I’m a fine arts student working on an art intervention about the coquí frog. One of Puerto Rico’s most recognizable and meaningful symbols. An art intervention is a creative act or installation that challenges how people see or think about something in everyday life. It uses art to start conversations and bring attention to overlooked issues.
My project focuses on how the coquí’s famous call, once a comforting sound of home, is being lost due to climate change, gentrification, and colonial tourism. The installation will feature a large paper-mâché coquí and a soundscape of real coquí calls. By making the coquí much larger than it is in real life, I want to show how small or silenced voices sometimes need to be amplified to be heard.
I plan to install this piece in one of the hallways of the NJCU Visual Arts Building, where students and visitors can experience it daily and reflect on the message it carries. I hope this project sparks conversations about cultural preservation, memory, and the importance of listening to what’s being lost.
Best,
Samantha Castro
