Post 3 / Email / Public Cookbook Altar

 Dear Hemisfair Events Team,

My name is Ingrid Rivera, and I’m a graphic design student currently attending New Jersey City University. I’m in the process of creating an art intervention. It will be a cookbook centered on recipes I am collecting from my community in Jersey City. It explores how food serves as a bridge between generations, connecting us to the memories, stories, and traditions of those who have passed away. Each dish tells a story of love, remembrance, and cultural pride.

An art intervention is a creative act that is placed in a public space to spark reflection or conversation. Reflection means seeing something in the art itself, maybe you’re able to relate to it in some shape or form. My cookbook functions as an art intervention by reimagining the cookbook not just as a collection of recipes, but as a living altar. This visual and emotional offering honors family, memory, and cultural heritage. I plan to create a “cookbook altar” where people can contribute handwritten recipes, photos, and memories of loved ones they’ve lost.

The current status quo often commercializes Día de los Muertos, focusing on its colorful imagery while overlooking the emotional and community depth behind it. Inspired by San Antonio’s commitment to keeping Muertos Fest at Hemisfair for the next decade, I hope my project can share that same dedication to authentic cultural remembrance. Spaces like yours play a vital role in preserving these traditions and keeping their meaning alive for future generations.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I admire how Hemisfair and the broader San Antonio community continue to honor and celebrate this tradition, and I hope to reflect similar authenticity and spirit in my work.

Warm Regards,
Ingrid Rivera
