Dear Mr. Deniz Camp,
My name is Evan Pierce Blumer. I’m 21, and a fourth year Illustration student at New Jersey City University in, you guessed it, New Jersey. Recently, I’ve been paying more and more attention to the state of the world and have been nothing short of disgusted. Every corner, every screen, every state, every country, I see people being taken advantage of by the ones who are supposed to protect them. The ones who bastardize the power given to them to serve the common people and, instead, choose to do whatever the Hell they want. Seeing all of this occurring around me has really inspired my approach to art and writing.
With all of this in mind, I have decided to structure the focus of my upcoming BFA exhibition to the strength of the common people. I’ve been planning on doing a mural that has regular every-day folks taking a stand and coming together to fight back against the world as one. Since I’ve grown up reading comic books, the people in my mural will be wearing makeshift masks of all kinds, from bandanas to hockey masks and facepaint. I want this to be a message that you can become more than just the person you are- you can become a symbol.
I am reaching out to you, Mr. Camp, because of your work on the current iteration of The Ultimates. I’ve been reading since release, and I’ve grown to really relate to the team as they fight to take back the world that had been stolen by them from The Council. Seeing all of these iconic characters- Captain America, Tony Stark, Thor, Wasp, Giant-Man, Human Torch, She-Hulk and the rest of the roster- decide to stand up against the powers that be and create their own paths made me realize that I should do the same with mine. For that, I really do need to thank you. This book has truly been an inspiration to me and I’m sure many others around the world who also feel like the world has taken a turn for the worse. If possible, I would appreciate it if we could further discuss the ways you wish for people to take charge of their lives and futures as the characters in your book do.
Below, I have provided some concepts and sketches to try to capture the feeling and tone that I want to emulate in my BFA. I hope you will take a look at it- it would be a huge help to have your input.
Best wishes,
Evan Pierce Blumer
