1. Consider your proposed BFA project and look for several relevant stories.
My BFA project is that of a fictional brand named "algabright" that creates photobioreactors and sells them to either be installed as pieces of public infrasatructure, in businesses, or smaller products in homes. Photobioreactors are installations that grow life such as algae, being able to do things such as treat wastewater and reduce carbon emissions.
My BFA would specifically consist of a full showcase of the brand, using a table or pedestal to display business cards, 3D models, and brand guidelines for "algabright" while the wall space would be used to display posters and a looped motion graphics video. The plan is to create as much of a complete brand as possible to both explore the idea of photobioreactors being used as a part of public infrastructure, as well as a showcase for my skills as a graphic designer and explore my interest in technology and development.
3. Post a link to one relevant story that means a lot to you and explain why.
This exact article is what eventually led me to my interest in photobioreactors. I had seen an image of this installation in Serbia, and quickly found myself in a rabbit hole on the topic. This installation was placed in an urban area that is noted for lacking the space to plant trees or bushes, combining technology with nature to find a solution to the problem.
This specific topic interests me a lot as I was supposed to be an engineer before I committed to going to college for an art degree. For the longest time I was learning with the expectation of going into a STEM field, prioritizing topics and learning that I would never need today. However, I still have an interest in many of the things in the field I was planning to enter, which includes that of integrating nature and technology together in a way that benefits our environment. I have family that work in various engineering fields as well, furthering my interest and exposure in the topic.
My interest in technology has been around for as long as I can remember, and exploring the idea of photobioreactors and "liquid trees" has allowed me to combine my current passion for design with that of a path that I never took. I get to explore the fun parts of engineering and development and combine it with the degree that I am pursuing now, all because I ran into this image of this liquid tree in Serbia. The idea of integrating nature and technology is one that is also explored often in science fiction, with many of my influences being from science fiction media. By designing a brand that explores photobioreactors, I get to be involved with making these things become even more of a reality.
