Post 3 / Email /”Request; Educational Art Display: What does your IEP look like?”

Dear Gus Tsekenis,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Abagail T. Serrano, and I am an illustrator and graphic designer based in Jersey City. The youth in our community are very important to me, and I think all students should have a relationship with the library and a diverse understanding of their peers.

I am writing to request a space at the Five Corners Library in Jersey City to host an art intervention and public art project. An art intervention is a creative initiative designed to engage viewers directly and encourage dialogue, participation, and change around a specific theme or social issue. This project, titled “What Does Your IEP Look Like?”, explores education, inclusion, and disability and neurodivergence awareness through a fun and interactive lens.

This project will showcase my diverse monster characters alongside sample IEPs I have created for them. Through this engaging and creative format, I aim to educate and raise awareness among both children and adults about IEPs, 504 plans, the importance of these supports, and broader topics.

Most people haven’t seen an IEP or 504 document before. One of my sisters is a teacher, and my other sister is in grade school with an IEP, so to say I am excited for others to learn would be an understatement. This would be set up like a traditional book signing, with cardboard cutouts of the characters, and in place of books there would be some simplified IEP and 504 plans, blank and ready to fill out for participants. With not just myself but other community members willing to participate

The characters are a cast of little monsters in the third grade, who all need extra help in the classroom. (example attached). They each have unique names and designs, but remain relatable to children throughout my slice of life like illustrations of them.

The goal is to create an inclusive, accessible, and imaginative environment where learning can spark important conversations about education and disability awareness.

I would love the opportunity to collaborate with you and bring this project to life for our community. Please let me know if we can discuss moving further with this project.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best,
Abagail T. Serrano
